There have been a lot of changes since 1972, when the Community Mental Health Services of Cleveland, based at City Hall, received an award from the Federal Government to start a Retired & Senior Volunteer Program. During that first year, one hundred and nine seniors, age 60 and above, were placed in volunteer positions.

From those 109 seniors we have grown to more than 3,000 volunteers of all ages, who donated over 300,000 hours of service to 150 area nonprofit agencies last year alone.

We have also managed the Experience Corps tutoring program for fifteen years. This innovative national project helps more than 1,000 Cleveland elementary school students develop their reading skills each year. 

There have been some name changes along the way – we became RSVP of Greater Cleveland in 2007 and adopted our current name, Greater Cleveland Volunteers, in 2009. 

Over the course of the past 40 years we have provided service to more than 20,000 volunteers and 500 nonprofit organizations. Our volunteers have given 16.8 million hours of service to the community.
